The feeling of the onset of a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is not a good one, to say the least. The good news is you can nip it in the bud with this drink. D-Mannose, a supplement you can find at most health food stores, has been shown to interfere with the adhesion of Escherichia coli (the bacteria that causes most UTIs) to the urinary tract. Escherichia coli produce lectins which bind to D-mannose which in turn prevents the bacteria from binding to epithelial cells of the urinary tract. They can then be flushed out of the system. In vitro tests suggest that d-mannose can partially or completely inhibit binding of around 50% of Escherichia coli strains to epithelial cells. Make sure you are eating a whole foods low refined sugar diet and drinking plenty of water, to aid your body in flushing out the bacteria. Of course, with any infection, if it is causing a fever or other severe reactions, please consult your doctor.
I have not suffered a UTI since I have been drinking this hydrating and anti-inflammatory drink, at onset of symptoms. It also helps soothe the urinary tract due to the anti-inflammatory properties of the turmeric. I usually drink this three times a day at onset of symptoms and continue to drink it until symptoms resolve. It feels and tastes like a treat and is great over ice!
