Aloe vera gel (Aloe barbadensis) is commonly used for weight loss, diabetes, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel diseases including ulcerative colitis, osteoarthritis, gastroduodenal ulcers, asthma, fever, itching and inflammation, and as a general tonic. Although there still is not enough evidence to prove it is effective for all of these ailments; traditional use shows us otherwise. What has been proven is that aloe vera gel has anti-inflammatory effects on the body. Carboxypeptidase and salicylate components of aloe gel were shown to inhibit bradykinin, a pain producing peptide. In colorectal mucosa aloe gel shows antioxidant effects and shows decreasing levels of colorectal prostaglandin E2 and interleukin-8. These effects may explain why aloe gel seems to help some patients with inflammatory bowel conditions.
This drink is so soothing to any mucosal part of the digestive tract, starting from any mucosal irritations in your mouth. It also helps when you are warding off an infection or you want to improve your immunity. Start off with a small inch cube in your drinks and see how well it is tolerated. Make sure you are using the gel part of the plant and not any other part that is close to the rind, a yellowish substance closer to the rind is aloe latex and has a powerful laxative effect.
This plant has so many uses while I am preparing the drink I cut off a little extra and blend it to make a skin and lip healing mask!
