Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) is traditionally used as an adaptogen, for improving energy, stamina, strength, mental capacity, athletic performance, sexual function, depression, anxiety, and for decreasing recovery time after prolonged workouts.

Preliminary clinical research shows that rhodiola root might decrease fatigue in stressful situations; taking 50 mg twice daily reduced mental fatigue and improved perceived stress in students during examination periods. In another study, 144 mg twice daily for 7 days reduced fatigue also in university students. In patients with stress-related fatigue, 576 mg daily for 28 days decreased symptoms of fatigue and increased attention span. In another study, a single dose of 370-555 mg after 24 hours without sleep improved tests of mental processing and short-term memory in participants. Apart from making this smoothie during stressful periods throughout graduate school; I have been preparing this combination on a day I know will not only be emotionally demanding but also physically demanding. Even though there is not enough current research to prove its use an an exercise performance enhancer, I have personally used it successfully for this purpose.
