When I was studying for my medical boards this is all I drank. I cannot say this is what made me eventually pass my boards but I also cannot say it was not instrumental in my success. There has been a lot of buzz lately with regard to mushrooms. Although they are currently trendy, they have had many medicinal and culinary uses for thousands of years. Medicinally, Lion’s mane has been used for age-related cognitive impairment, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. In-vitro studies suggest that active constituents in Lion’s mane promote nerve growth factor (NGF) synthesis in the hippocampus of rats. Theoretically, this neurotropic effect may benefit patients with susceptibility to cognitive impairment because deficiency in NGF is thought to be one cause of certain cognitive diseases .

These mushrooms usually grow on decaying trunks of hardwood trees such as oak but can also grow by using supplemented sawdust hardwood. I prefer to use the whole mushroom (fresh or dried) in preparations due to the fact that processing can affect the effectiveness of the active constituents. I’m a little skeptical of the effectiveness of those little brown packets sold online. My favorite way to use Lion’s Mane is by slicing up a mushroom, placing it in a mug then pouring hot water over it and letting it steep overnight. In the morning, I like to add honey and drink it instead of my morning cup of lemon water.
